Here's a custom solution for those
who like to take their dog(s) along on trips to town - or across
the country. We have a BIG dog, and our
Great
Pyrenees loves to travel in the truck.
Open the window and instant nirvana! Although our state permits dogs to ride in the open bed of a
pick-up, we aren't comfortable with the idea. So, we built
a "cab pad" for her so she could travel safely with us inside the
truck cab.

 Have dog will travel...
This pic shows the customized dog pad installed,
resting on the pull-down metal "shelves" under the seats.
Tucked behind the driver's seat is the "step" she uses to
access the cab.
Our 1-ton 4x4 sits very high off the ground, so rather
than have our 100 lb. pooch jump up and down, we build a
simple step that locks in place between the frame and the
chrome step bar. More on this later...

A better view of our dog's pad including a few of her
favorite chews.
#1 shows the pad resting on the metal
shelves common to late-model Dodges.
#2 shows the "rails" that keep toys and
chews from falling into the cracks behind the seats.
This also gives the dog a place to brace her feet while the
truck is negotiating traffic and road conditions.
The pad is made from a piece of 3/4" exterior
plywood with the rails glued and screwed to the sides.
Inexpensive Indoor/Outdoor carpeting is glued and stapled on
the bottom pf the pad. Bu using this carpet, you can
literally clean the pad with a garden hose as water will not
harm the carpet or the exterior plywood.
Next, see how we solved the access problem by
building a simple, removable
step to
enter and exit the truck's cab.
