To
avoid this, we build a simple step that fits snugly between
the frame and the chrome step bar.
The "step" was built from a simple 1x12" board with "lips"
that wedge it securely between the chrome step bar and under
the door frame.
The step was then covered with the same Indoor-Outdoor
carpeting we used for the pad (see picture at right).
It took our dog a little coaxing to use the step as she
seemed quite apprehensive at first. Placing dog treats
on the step seemed to get her to recognize it and having her
watch our hand place additional treats on top of the pad
prompted her to use the step to obtain a better view.
The first couple of tries, we had to lift her bottom and
place her hind paws on the step before she would follow
through with the action. After playing this game a few
times, the dog recognized the procedure and would use the
step. Disembarking from the cab was a natural and
didn't cause any issues.
